Our sense of hearing provides a fundamental connection between an individual, the natural world and society. Recognition of sound allows us to be comforted, enlightened, surprised, warned, frightened, reminded, pleasured and intrigued. When sound recognition is diminished by hearing loss, the connections between individuals, nature and society are broken or distorted.
